New rumors are pointing to a new version of the MacBook Air that could quickly make all of the companies looking to get into the Ultrabook game cry just a little bit.
The MacBook Air has been pretty darn successful for Apple, enough so that PC makers are trying to come up with Windows-based versions of it that are being labeled as “Ultrabooks.”  None of them have caught on as Apple’s has, but if enough of them get out there, the sheer quantity of options could cause the Cupertino-based company some headaches.
According to a new report fromDigiTimes, to combat this potential onslaught, Apple is readying a new version of the laptop that will run only $799.  Citing “sources from the upstream supply chain,” the report goes on to say that the new versions of the laptop will ship sometime in the third quarter of this year.  Chipmaker Intel, one of the driving forces behind Ultrabooks, has been hoping to get the Windows machines down to $699 in the second half of this year, which would place them well below the current MacBook Air base price of $999.
While it sounds like it would make sense for Apple to come out with a $799 version, this isn’t a company that is known for following the pack.  We’ll have to wait and see what the company has up its sleeve as all of its laptop models are due for a refresh in the coming months.
